Going back to a comment
kikos_ai made awhile ago, the way the Sailormoon manga deals with things is very interesting. God save it, I still love it as much as I ever did, but it is straight up
cracktastic. Thing one. Dude, Mamoru is like, 17/18 when the series starts, right? And Usagi (I had to actually pause and think of her name, I wanted to call her Bunny) is 14. And she's all spendin' the night at her boyfriend's house and whatnot, lying to her parents about it. And in the text, Mamoru insists that "we have an innocent relationship" and "you're going home, my rep's on the line" (SuperS vol. 1), but in vol. 5 (of the regular series), they
totally do it. So they
have done it. And they have sleepovers all the time, with or without Chibi-Usa, so I don't think that two horny teens (with somewhat adult mentalities, while Usagi is the least emotionally mature of any of the senshi, as Sailormoon she's distinctly adult), especially ones who have seen the future and know they will end up together
with kids are going to spend completely innocent nights together sleeping in the same bed. (Hilariously, when I was looking through the manga to find the scene I was thinking of, I actually picked up the correct volume on the first go, and opened
right to the page. Pure accident, I swear.)
And another thing. Why does Chibi-Usa never acknowledge that Ikuko-Mama is her grandmother? She is, right?
valmont_god and I were discussing this; Usagi was obviously reborn into this century, it's a reincarnation thing, yes, but Ikuko-mama and Kenji-papa are her biological parents. So therefore they are Chibi-Usa's biological grandparents, but that's never discussed. Nor do they ever really go into the idea that Usagi and Mamoru actually
are her folks, they're treated almost as separate entities, and they refer to NQS as "your mom" as though she isn't Usagi's future self. As though she is a separate woman altogether, even though she isn't. And NQS always refers to SAilormoon as a separate woman, although I suppose that can be justified in that she lost her powers when she reached 22 and became Queen isntead. And you know, what happens to her family when that happens? Mom and Dad and brother whose name I forget? What happens to Ami's workaholic mom and absentee dad, Rei's crazy grandfather, Minako's mom that we haven't seen since the Sailor V manga? (Or maybe we have? I'm not up to the 'Venus Dream' chapter yet.)
Getting back to my original point, though, the SuperS saga is all about dreams. The Dead Moon Circus plays on your inner dreams and tries to brainwash the senshi into giving up fighting for these dreams, so they can steal heart crystal energy or whatever the fuck it is that they do. Mostly just dance around like gay clowns. And the senshi all have very specific dreams: Minako wants to get married and be a star (as two separate dreams, although I suppose she could get married and achieve stardom through some Sonny and Cher type business); Rei wants to manage her own shrine; Ami wants to be a doctor; Makoto wants to get married and run a bakery and flower shop (both in the same building, I think, which is a bit weird, but all right. I question trying to run a bakery surrounded by pollen, but one way or another, someone with allergy issues would walk into that building ad just drop dead). And they all more or less get talked out of these dreams by these crazy inner whatevers of them. Ami's mini-Mercury, Phobos and Deimos, mini-Jupiter human!Artemis. Don't have lives of your own, ladies! Give up everything to save Serenity and Endymion['s penis]. The girls honestly never go on to do anything else but fight. And they get their powers reduced to their original forms, but I believe that's only because Naoko had no idea the series would go on that long, and everyone would require power-ups. And, you know, even when they get their fancy-schmancy power-ups and new battle abilities, it's still Sailormoon that comes in and saves the day with her big pink stick. And these ladies die a lot, too, while we're at it.
And this is not even discussing the continuing weirdness of the whole Mamoru/Chibi-Usa relationship. Does he not even find it remotely weird that his
daughter from the future is competing for his love with his current girlfriend? He treats them approximately the same. (Minus the sex, which he claims he is not having!) Gives them the same gifts. Takes them out for ice cream. Tells adult!Chibi-Usa that she's hot and whatnot. Not to mention that time he was all brainwashed and ran off with Wicked Lady and her short-shorts. Goddammit, Mamoru, keep it in your pants. No, for reals, it's very incestuous and downright creepy. It's even weirder when you consider that Chibi-Usa is 901/902/903, one of those, so she is older, and... you know what, I can't even process/articulate my frustrations. This series is so screwed up.
